Welcome to The Word, a cosy, buzzing independent bookshop in New Cross. We’re bulging with wonderful books to dive into or give as presents.
There’s fantastic new and popular fiction for grown-ups, children’s books for toddlers to teens, and a great selection of poetry and graphic novels.
We’ve also got plenty of serious, and not so serious, non-fiction – from biographies to books on politics, history, race and gender.
We’re also part of the fabric and community of Goldsmiths College, University of London, working in a collaborative relationship, and closely liaising with teaching staff and responding to students’ needs.

We can get most books in print so, if you can’t find it on our shelves or website, please ask, either in person, by phone (020 8355 9378 ) or email (info@wordbookshop.co.uk) and we’ll do our best to get it for you.
The majority of books in print in the UK can be sourced relatively easily, and most arrive within about 3-5 working days, and sometimes even next day.
For Goldsmiths we aim to stock the majority of titles recommended by teaching staff, but can usually order in any we don’t have in stock.
The Word’s return/exchange policy
If you buy a book in error and need to return it, we will either exchange it for another book, or issue a credit note.
You must return the book in mint condition within 14 days, together with the till receipt.
We do not accept credit/debit card counterfoils as proof of purchase.
THIS DOES NOT AFFECT YOUR STATUTORY RIGHTS.
Unfortunately, we cannot accept any returns on Second Hand Books.
